About

Nick Gascoigne

I enjoy collaborating with creative people and companies on a variety of projects. Let's chat about what you'd like to do online.

My name is Nick and I've been working full time under the name Liquidshape since 2005. I love the web. Things move pretty fast around here and I have a compulsive habit of reading all about it and playing with some of the new tech.

I was trained as a designer at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney. I did print design for a while before jumping onto the web in 2000. I did a lot of Flash design and have been around long enough to see a few technologies come and go. What's great now is that the web has achieved a reasonable level of maturity as a medium, both from its wider audience and the technology used to deliver it. So now I can employ techniques that are state of the art yet backed by sound experience, both my own and that of the wider developer community.

The reason I taught myself front-end developer skills is because I wanted to control my designs precisely. I fell in love with the instant feedback and sheer potential of what's possible. I do like to step back from the computer though and am as comfortable leading design presentations and talking to clients as I am behind the screen documenting features or writing code. I enjoy this mix of activities and the variety of projects and clients so I've remained an independent contractor over the years and built up some good business relationships with leading media and communication agencies as well as individual clients.

I work from the Northern Beaches in Sydney and share a studio with other designers and digital crafty people. I have a great network of subcontractors and collaborators that I call on to help me with projects, so I act in a producer role sometimes too.

For fun and inspiration I surf, travel to exotic locales, photograph and look out for interesting art and design of all kinds.
